Pickle Time!

We’ve had a bunch of inquiries lately, because it’s that season again: Pickle time!!

We grow gorgeous fresh pickling cukes at the farm.  They are picked every 2-3 days, and though we do make lots of our own pickles on the farm, many cucumbers go to our customers who make their own.

How it works: We keep a list of names of those who are interested in buying pickling cucumbers.  After, or shortly before a harvest we go through our list and call to see who can take them.  Since picking happens every few days, this may not always be on a market day and so pickup is often at the farm (just 5 miles NE of Brandon).

DSC01817The cukes are small and perfect for pickles, we don’t do gherkins (they set the plants back a few days and we need our production every few days).  Varieties are Pioneer, National Pickling and some Cool Breeze.  They are $2.00 per pound and come unwashed as they keep better that way.  You will receive them within 24 hours of harvest (which we think is key to making excellent pickles).  We also have dill and garlic available if you need it – Garlic is $12/lb (around $2/head) and bunches of dill $3.

Here’s our recipe for 10 lbs of pickling cukes (makes about 8 quarts).  You can also use this brine recipe to make dilled carrots, jalapenos, and beans – which we can also supply the veggies for!  Email us for more info, or if you need supplies for relish or any other type of pickling or preserving you may be doing this season.
